Dare Mighty Things

I love Gatwick Airport. In 2012, it became like a third home to me after my own home and Scotland. We spent many mornings together. It was in the comforts of the departure lounge that I endured delays, missed flights, countless hours on the phone and untold amount of time on FaceTime or Skype with Isabelle and Emilio. I have experienced all manner of emotions there too. Extreme tiredness, happiness, sadness, joy, wonder, delight, loneliness, annoyance, irritation, frustration, you name it! All for very different reasons.

Arriving here this morning, takes me back to what became my regular commute: Monday: 3am alarm, 4am depart, 5am arrive, 5.30 breakfast, 6.15 to the gate, 6.40 board, 7am off the stand, 7.10 wheels up, 8.20 land, 8.30 on the stand, 8.40 in arrivals collecting bags, 9.00 bus to the Glasgow city centre, 9.25 off the bus, 9.30 arrive at the office.

After a full days work on the Monday I was very ready for bed in the evening so normal ate in the bar or in my room. Tuesday became the Glasgow social night. On Wednesdays, there were occasionally slightly jaded heads first thing which were soon beaten out of you by events of the day and then the commute home done in reverse to the above commenced at 5.30 and ended sometime around 10.30 or 11 depending on traffic.

Looking back now, it was quite an ask but completely necessary. I go where the work is, it’s simple. I know others that have upped and moved towns, cities and countries for work. I know others that are away Monday to Friday every week. I only did 3 days, I never had to go away at weekends, I was always home on Thursday and friday so, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t awful and I’d do it again if I had to.

Since they began their redevelopment, I have seen a huge change at Gatwick Airport. The entrance in my picture was one of the first things they did and it always strikes me as such a warm and inviting entrance. I haven’t applied any filters to it because it doesn’t need it. The shadows and lighting all create the frame.

Gatwick is only about a hour from home which means it’s nice and easy to travel to but, more importantly, at the end of a long few days, a long day or even a week away, when i see this entrance again on the way out, I know I’m only an hour away from home: And that always makes me happy.

(This may be backdated: I couldn't post it last night because of poor mobile signal)
