Electrifying
One of the Kelpies... these are the ones not far from Grangemouth... posing perfectly by some power lines.
On one level, they make me laugh... the website is full of pretentious stuff about "ancient ethereal equine water-spirits" and suchlike;
now, kelpies in Scottish folklore are anything but ethereal. They are malignant water-spirits, that take the form of horses and wander innocently and alluringly up to hapless travellers. When the travellers pet the lovely creatures, they find themselves stuck fast. The kelpie then takes them to the nearest water course and drowns them.
But I'm unconvinced even the artist believes this stuff... the sculptures are anything but ethereal and there is definitely an air of menace about them.
They're very striking, and worth anyone's time with a camera. I like them.
The first time I saw them was at Edinburgh Airport, welcoming the visitors; and when I realized what they were supposed to be, I burst out laughing.
"Greetings, sassenachs. The Firth of Forth is this way... "
