Cottage, Church Street, Godalming

Today we went to Godalming which is full of old buildings. There are lots of Charity Shops as well and plenty to keep one occupied. There are a lot of timber-framed buildings of which No 11 Church Street is one. The framing visible in this house is likely to be 16th Century. One way it is possible to tell is in the thickness of the timbers and how neat and regular they are. There are curved braces which you can see just above the first floor. These are also quite decorative. Earlier houses have heavy thick timbers in them and the way they are arranged can be irregular. Whatever the precise date, this house adds considerable charm to the street.
