Muntham Wood, Itchingfield Looking SW
It doesn't look much like a wood, but this field was woodland at the time of the Tithe Survey of Itchingfield around 1841. It seems to have remained woodland up into modern times and was eventually grubbed out I think in the 1970's. This view is looking south west towards Barns Green. A trackway runs from Itchingfield to Barns Green via Muntham House. Before the latter became a school, this would have been the main access from the house to church and wiould have passed through Muntham Wood which was on both sides of this still existing trackway. The Chitty family and later the Godmans owned the house and were the main landowners into the early 20th Century in Itchingfield Parish.
