Surely not a cruise ship?
We walk up to this spot on the crater rim, looking down into the port of Lyttelton, regularly and this is the first time we've seen a cruise ship in port since before the February 2011 earthquake. Most of them now go to Akaroa instead. So it was a quite a surprise.
Another surprise was when a phone started ringing while we were standing there watching a tug towing the ship into its berth. It wasn't our phone. It was lying on the ground, so we picked it up and answered it. The owner was on the other end, wondering where he had left it. So an hour or so later, when we had walked home and had breakfast the phone's owner knocked on the door to collect it, with a box of chocolates in his hand. 'One good turn deserves another' he said, which was very nice of him... but not in the least bit necessary. He and friends had been up there photographing the sunrise, when a spider ran up the arm of his friend. In trying to dislodge it, he thinks his phone must have fallen from his pocket! Quite a lot of activity, all before 9.00 am on Waitangi Day, a holiday here in New Zealand.
