Local

When we first moved to Cumbria 14 years ago there were more pubs but in general they were rubbish. Now we have fewer and they're mostly restaurants, excellent restaurants, but not real pubs anymore.
I don't drink that much ( & every pub is a drive away) so I'm not all that bothered by some aspects of this, but I do miss the old boys who used to prop up the bar & I wonder where they go now. I've spent many an hour nursing a pint and listening to their tales, its a sad day if those tales won't be heard anymore.
We were out with friends tonight and the pub was full of diners, the bar empty. The days of walking the dog to the local and chewing the fat, reworking the day & embellishimg adventures are gone. Good business I'm sure, but a loss in some ways.
For many rural villages the pub was the hub of the community and now its gone, and with that a connection has been lost, I can't see it coming back and I think when we lose these interactions we become poorer.
