Edinburgh Bridges #17 Bonnington Rd. Bridge

Catching up with Edinburgh’s bridges takes me to Bonnington Rd and another bridge over the Water of Leith . Although the date of this bridge is at the turn of the 20th century (1902-3) there has been a village here since the middle of the 12th Century when it was mentioned as part of the Barony of Broughton. It was a place where water mills were prevalent and although there was a period of trouble during the Rough Wooing (1543-1550) the village, whose original name was Bonnytoun ,changed from a mill village to a community based on the dyeing of cloth and linen in the early 17th Century and today some of the houses built for the owners of these works are still being used as domestic homes.
There must have been bridges over the river here prior to the one in the blip but there seems to scant reports of them.

There are still a few bridges over the Water of Leith to go and more than a few other ones as well.
