The Martlets Tree, Queen's Square, Crawley
Another horrible day of awful weather - wind, rain, hail and thunder and lightning! We went to Crawley as most is under cover and a successful visit. While it was dry, we were out in the main square and this sculpture looked a good candidate for today.
The plaque underneath states that it was made in 1999 by Richard Quinnell and designed by Peter Parkinson. The work is a celebration of the heraldic origin of the street name "The Martlets". The Martlet, a mythical heraldic bird features on the 13th Century Coat Of Arms of the Norman De Arundel family, a major Sussex Landowner and appears on the Arms of both Crawley Borough and West Sussex County Council. The images on the tree also show symbols of local importance from Iron Smelting, Agriculture and Transport.
