CannyScot's Day

Black Watch Memorial in Dundee

This Memorial, to the north of Dundee and overlooking the City, was built in memory of the 440 men from Dundee and Angus who died, serving with the Black Watch, during the Second World War. Rather than a stone showing the names, it portrays an ordinary soldier in Black Watch service uniform. The view from the spot is one of the best of the City and you get the feeling that the soldier is proud of his roots and his regiment.
The Regiment was part of the reorganisation of the Army, which basically merged six Scottish regiments into one. After considerable opposition, a compromise was reached and the regiment became known as The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland. Whatever the politics, brave men will still enlist and some will ultimately give their lives.
