Don't go here today!

"Footpath" the signpost in Port Meadow says. But we are near the Thames here and, as many know, the Thames is in flood.

Port Meadow gets waterlogged like this as a result, and the footpath advertised is under water.

One of the silver linings comes about if the weather turns icy when the meadow is fully flooded. The whole area becomes a giant skating rink, and hordes of people skating around colourfully dressed make a very jolly sight.

Although the floods are a pain for so many people, they do provide some interesting and attractive scenes. Our main photograph here was taken just after passing over the bridge that crosses the main railway line into Oxford station. Beyond the railway lies the canal, where I took this photograph of the canal spilling over onto the tow-path.
