McCaig's Tower

My wife drove me into Oban this morning - first time out after the new hip - and as I was unable to roam around looking for a good Blip I took this shot through the houses from the prosaic environs of Tesco's car park!

McCaig's Tower - and not McCaig's Folly as it's sometimes known - overlooks this Argyll coastal town and was designed and built by the banker John Stuart McCaig both as a memorial to his family and as a means of employing out of work stonemasons during the winter months. Over the winters of 1987 to 1902 the granite walls were raised, but the death of John McCaig brought the project to an unfinished halt.

The Tower provides a wonderful look-out over Oban and the islands and is a popular spot for viewing the sunset.
