Alstroemeria still life
I had some difficulty in executing this still life of an Alstroemeria shoot on black velvet. Part of the difficulty lay in choosing how much of the sprig to show and how much of the image I wanted to be fully in focus so I shot a range of images at different apertures which meant I could make my choice on screen. Much though the leaves are untidy and curling away in different directions, I decided to show the full sprig of flowers and then decided that that maximum focus area would be most appropriate as party of the nature of these flowers is their unruly nature. This, of course, caused other problems as shooting at f32 meant that every little speck of dust and hair on the black velvet became apparent. I dealt with these by a combination of cloning and Gaussian blur and then got rid of the folds in the cloth by selective darkening using curves with a mask. If you look closely you will be able to see this as the texture of the black velvet is more apparent in the foreground but lost completely at the back of the image. I wuld be interested in people’s comments on whether I made the right choice to go for the whole flower. By going large you can see for yourself what detail f32 on a 50mm macro lens will give you.
