Shore, Palos Verdes (southern California)
Much of my experience of southern California is riding around for hours on end in a car, which somehow always seems to be necessary to get from one place to another in the seemingly endless asphalt and concrete mini/maxi-mall paradise of this region.
I grew up here but don't have much sense of Los Angeles' innumerable neighborhoods, let alone the city itself, except that I think it embraced cultural and ethnic diversity in a way that no other major US city has. You can drive through extensive neighborhoods of one immigrant group or another. Spanish is ubiquitous, as is Farsi, Tagalog, Chinese, etc. And sometimes (often) I find it intensely ugly, yet it is always vibrant.
But when visiting family I always seek out the ocean. This was taken on a run along the cliffs of Palos Verdes, a purposely under-developed area with considerable beauty, and, once upon a time, superb tidepooling.
