Baobab Tree, Tollcross Park, Glasgow
The first of the eleven wooden sculpture series created by Robert Coia. It is part of a commission by Glasgow City Council, Project 2014 Legacy for the Commonwealth Games. It is as though the branches are arms outstretched, with an elephant and birds carved into the trunk.
The Baobab Tree is also known as the Tree of Life, and is the oldest living thing on the African continent. Some trees are around 2,000 years old.
We knew it was in the park, but having walked all around, couldn't find it. I asked a gardener, and he offered to open the gate to a small garden just behind the glasshouse. Seemingly it is kept locked at the moment, due to recent graffiti vandalism. So sad.
I have blipped three others so far :-
African Bull Elephant in Pollok Park.
Mackintosh Rose in Bellahouston Park.
Giant Panda in Queen's Park.
