TranzAlpine

Greymouth is where you board the train for this spectacular rail journey from the west to east coast . The pamphlet in your front seat states "The TranzAlpine is rated as one of the great train journeys of the world". By who, you initially wonder, though once the train pulls out of Greymouth and begins its journey through the pristine rainforests of the western coast, you begin to realise how tough it would be to dispute this claim. You soon enter the Otira tunnel and burst into 737m high "Arthurs Pass" and marvel at the snow peaked mountains that surround you. Then through the Canturbury Plains and and into your final destination; the city of Christchurch.

The train is unique in that it has a carriage dedicated as a viewing platform. This provides open panoramic views of the rolling landscape. Only a 4' high railing separates you and the countryside. Great to see a place where crazy health and safety madness hasn't extended these railings to full height.

The four and a half hour journey was worth every minute.

Later we went into Christchurch centre (Sol Square) to find a pub for food and drink. We had also been here last Tuesday when the pubs were packed with revellers enjoying Melbourne Cup Day so surely today would be quieter? However, we discovered that Christchurch too has its very own "Cup Day" which it obviously celebrates in a far more exuberant fashion. Jodie and I looked extremely odd amongst the suits and mini skirts that were rammed into every boozer. Some looked pleased with their winnings though most looked like they were out to drown their sorrows and drink as much as they possibly could...great atmosphere though.

Does Christchurch celebrate cup days every Tuesday?
