Seed Saving

We undertook a variety of tasks today at our monthly workday meeting, this was one of the easier tasks, saving the seeds of two different squash varieties. Mike and Madeline run a small company called Brown Envelope Seeds, which specialises in heritage vegetables. We also mended the torn plastic on the polytunnel, damaged in one of the many recent storms. Repaired harness and made a hot bed in the polytunnel, this involved drawing wheelbarrows full of steaming manure from the cow shed and filling a prepared large rectangular raised bed with wooden sides, the idea is that the manure generates heat and seeds that require warmer conditions for germination get off to a fine start with a bit of bottom heat! It was such a wet miserable day that a hearty shared supper afterwards went down a treat.
