"The Old Button Box"
One of the tunes that we sometimes play at our accordion class is "the Old Button Box" although we are all playing piano accordions rather than button boxes.
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I had been helping two Australian ladies empty their elderly father's house - he had been in his nineties. One of his possessions was this old Hohner Double ray Black dot accordion and I have been given the task of helping to dispose of it and another newer Italian button accordion.
The fascinating fact for me is that this old man was taught to play by the legendary Sir Jimmy Shand (from Auchtermuchty - only a few miles from where I live) and as this instrument is certainly old enough there is a very good chance that Jimmy Shand actually played or at least instructed the old man to play on this instrument.
This is certainly an Old Button Box and it still makes a beautiful sound - I wish I could get used to the fact that the buttons on the right hand make a different sound if you squeeze or expand the bellows - a bit like a "moothie" !
