In which I go completely meta.
It's been said that a comic strip that goes self referential is one that's run out of ideas. I did this something like five times in two years AND an It's A Wonderful Life parody. But I had so much to say!
This was September 1999, and aside from teaching two classes and taking three, I was tutoring and drawing two strips a day. I was kind of stressed about this time, and still unable to understand why the world at large hadn't fallen all over themselves about my comic strip.
I also had a rather humiliating meeting with the comic syndicate rep, the guy who at the time was also handling Dykes to Watch out For and The Mostly Unfabulous Life of Ethan Greene, which were strips I absolutely worshipped and which gave me the idea for even doing this. For three hours we went through a point by point discussion of my cartooning, and how none of these characters had any licensing potential. It was devastating.
