#BritainFromAbove @The_Lighthouse
This is a Blip for camera geeks...
I was in Glasgow city centre for a meeting this morning so jumped into The Lighthouse afterwards because I wanted to see the Derelict Glasgow exhibition.
I found it and it was good (if totey wee), but I also found an exhibition of aerial photography featuring black and white pictures of early 20th century Scottish industrial sites from the air called Britain From Above - Scotland's Industrial Might.
This fascinating display features factories, shipyards, mills, ironworks and their surrounding communities over three decades from 1919-1953.
It showcases the Aerofilms Collection. I'd never heard of this, but Aerofilms were the world's first commercial aerial photography company.
The collection has now been preserved as part of the Britain from Above project.
From Govan to Gourock to Kilmarnock to Peterhead to Inverkeithing, the pictures gave you a parallel birds' eye view of an industrial heritage which has all but disappeared.
This camera was on display.
It's a lightweight, hand-held aerial camera used during the Second World War by the US Army Air Force.
Made by the Fairfax Aviation Corporation, New York, it creates an image size of 4x5.
According the the bumph, after the war, many of these K-20 cameras were destroyed in order to stop the market being flooded with cameras, and they became prized possessions for companies like Aerofilms.
