Just after 12.51
This shot was taken just after the minute's silence was observed at 12.51pm - the exact time the quake struck on February 22, 2011 looking over to the CTV site where 115 people died. The CTV building collapsed catastrophically when the February 22, 2011 quake hit.
The white Chairs is a art installation by Peter Majendie each chair represents one of the 185 lives lost in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Each chair, just like its owner, has its own distinct personality, with the installation including armchairs, dining room chairs, a wheel chair, and even a baby capsule. The 185 square metres of grass that the chairs sit on represents new growth and regeneration – something which you can see and feel across the whole city. The artist’s statement poetically reminds us all that the ‘installation is temporary – as is life’.
I wasn't sure what to do today and my friend rang to say she would like to do something special but didn't want to be with a large crowd of people. So we picked some flowers and I threw some in the river and we watched them flood away down stream. We sat in Latimer Square for a while then made our way to the CTV site. By then a lot more people had arrived so we put our flowers there and walked over to the White Chair installation across the street and observed the minute's silence.
Each chair had a beautiful red carnation .. it was all very emotionally, but glad we went. The Civic Commemoration memorial service for the 185 quake victims was held at Botanic Gardens.
Today has been so hot again not sure of the temperature but I think it must have been around 32c at least Still have my headache but luckily it isn't as bad as yesterday. But this heat isn't helping.
