Greenock: through the looking glass

I had a meeting with Alec Galloway (Alec on Blipfoto) at The Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock.
He is the driving force behind Absent Voices.
This picture shows the view northwards from the Beacon's restaurant. The glass panel at the top of the shot is Alec's work.
Lots and lots to talk about today as the story of the sugar industry in Greenock is never ending.
Alec is on a quest to find out more about his great-grandfather, who was killed in the Greenock blitz in 1942 when a bomb hit the sugar house where he worked.
Ironically we also talked about the German connection to the sugar industry, which brought thousands of Germans to Greenock during the late 19th and early 20th century.
Such is the crazy futility of war, that young German pilots were sent on missions to destroy the sugar houses which their countrymen had helped build.
There are many people with German ancestry still living in Inverclyde.
