The End of the Line

RAF Lossiemouth's day-to-day role is to train and prepare for the projection of air power on operations world-wide.

The station is home to 2 operational squadrons of Tornado, No. 12 (Bomber) Squadron and No. 617 Squadron, the famous Dambusters. It is also home to the XV (Reserve) Squadron, who train all Pilots and Weapons Systems Operators to operate the Tornado GR4.

On 31 March 31 2014, in its 99th year, 12 Squadron will be formally disbanded.

As the Tornado force is disbanded and the Typhoon force grows the future of RAF Lossiemouth is assured when the station becomes home to Typhoon aircraft later this year.

Unfortunately there were no Tornados on the runway today. I would have loved to have witnessed one landing or taking off at such close proximity.
