The Sussex Oak, Church Street, Warnham

Although not a wonderful picture, I wanted to get the outbuilding that stands next to the pub into the picture. The earliest record of The Sussex Oak being a pub dates from 1832. In 1852, the landlord was also a wheelwright and his successor in 1866 was a bootmaker. If I am correct in saying, there was once a large oak tree outside which was blown down in the Great Storm of 16 October 1987.

The timber famed outbuilding may well have served as stabling for those staying at the inn in times past. The rest of the building visible looks mostly 19th Century, especially the far right hand end. The gabled section to the left of this looks to me to be about 17th Century and is roofed with Horsham Slates. This remains an attractive, active and popular pub and long may it continue given the alarming number of pubs closing at this time.
