What's In A Street Name 5 - Stirling Way

This road is almost certainly named after Stirling in Scotland, rather than anyone with that name and given that another road nearby is Lanark Close. Stirling is located in Central Scotland on the River Forth. Created a city by the Queen in 2002, it has a population of nearly 46, 000 at the last census. The city is built around a medieval core and the castle which has an impressive hall which is the finest of it's type in Scotland and has recently been restored. The castle is one of the most important in Scotland and was also where Mary, Queen Of Scots was crowned in 1542. In 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie unsuccessfully tried to take the castle. It can be seen from quite a distance, it being atop a high crag, as I have seen it from the motorway. Not too far away is the famous Wallace Memorial. Finally the area around has some of Scotland's most fertile farmland, but industry is also prominent as for instance many of our postboxes are and have been made locally to Stirling.
