Saving Grace
Doncaster Minster.
The train from Edinburgh to London gave up the ghost at Doncaster, depositing hundreds of people with no plans to be in Doncaster - and no plans to ever go there again. I looked at the map on my phone and found the Minster - worth a look. I ventured out into the black rain to find a massive new facility-free bus station next to the old facility-free train station and was very nearly put off.
But! Defiantly, I unfolded my Brompton and cycled around the bleak, featureless wasteland where the only open businesses are American (MacDonalds, Subway) and absolutely everything else was shut. Even Tesco shut at 4pm.
And so to the Minster. Very lovely, very nicely lit. Very incongruous.
Back to the train station for the next service to London - of course, no reservations had made it onto the seats and the guard did the usual mantra of apologising, "for any inconvenience caused." They say that so often that it can't possibly mean anything at all.
Bought beer, put headphones on, read Le Carre. Rise above it. London at 23.17.
