Knitting elastic bands

This is a new one on me. The series of hooks get small rubber bands put on them, and with a crochet type plastic hook tool, each one gets lifted up and over the next. Finally they are all taken off and the first loop and last loop put into that clear s shaped bit of plastic at the very left of image. Kept a grandchild happy for ages.

You can make head bands like the blue one above, or bracelets or even rings.
The system reminds me of what we did with a wooden cotton reel with a few nails in the top then by looping and hooking the wool, we made a simple knitted tube. Do you remember? I had great fun and made long tubes. Then you had to work out a use but that was secondary.

Like many modern toys it has a basis in an old idea.
One of my favourite old modern toys is a set of trains and wagons with magnets to couple at each end of each wagon. The engine can pull 6 to 8 wagons just with the magnetic linkages.
