Every year for nearly the last 570 years the people of Olney in Buckinghamshire have held their annual Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday. Since 1950 it has become an international event following a challenge from the town of Liberal in Kansas, USA after they saw a photo of the Olney event. The race is open to ladies who live in the parish of Olney, and this is the start but the result will remain a closely guarded secret until the race in Liberal has been run in a few hours time. The prize for the winner is a kiss from the verger at Olney church.
