Moving Into The Unknown

Sunday Drive

I used to love taking Sunday drives with my family around the Finger Lakes region. We'd often head out for a few hours after lunch just before the evening milking. There wasn't usually a lot of talking in the car, but the calm, steady hum of tires on the road felt reassuring somehow. I don't think dad ever pushed it past 40 m.p.h. on those country roads. To be free from chores during that time was exhilarating. Even dad must have found a sense of freedom from the farm during those drives - no need to rush. Most special were those times when the whole family piled in the car - my brother, sister, me, mom, dad. We kids poked and prodded each other, but knew we'd likely end up at the tasty-freeze for ice cream if we managed not to get in any real fights.

Today, I ventured out on the country roads. It was fun seeing this furry family of cattle enjoying their Sunday, grazing in the fields high above town. I think they enjoyed seeing me, too - I could sense their ease as I sat down on the ground near them for a few photos.
