Water Gate - Embankment Gardens
This Water Gate in London's Embankment Gardens is the sole remains of York House, built for the Duke of Buckingham in the early 1600s.
As the name suggests, in those days it opened onto the river. Today the river is over 100 metres away, canalised by the embankments built in Victorian times to house London's new sewers.
