B.A.C.K. to Basics

Mace had yet to experience a snow storm. Sure, he's seen snow on the ground, experienced the occasional flurry, and has endured the brutal winds of this winter. But, an actual snow storm? Not yet... not until today that is.

I was graciously given the opportunity to leave work early today due in part to the storm. Our schedule was light, and the heaviest of the snowfall was expected in the afternoon/evening/overnight hours. Upon leaving my office, he instantly froze when he stepped onto the deck. The snow at the time was heavy and wet, and he was unsure how he felt about it. Hesitation and then fear crept up in him, a small whimper and the sad eyes looked up at me, as if saying "help me Momma, I'm scared". Pathetic, I know.

All reservations about the snow were forced aside once we arrived home though. We headed out simply for a quick bathroom run, and he found the joy within the snow. He leapt and frolicked in the snow, ran through the field, dove into it, sniffed the falling flakes, and loved every minute.

Our second trip for a "walk" was more of the same... this time, however, the snow had accumulated much more than the hour before and Mace had a rough time trudging through. He managed to run, bounce and leap once again, though our final leg back to the house was a much slower pace. He's tuckered out now, snoring on his bed.

The kids had a half day at school, thankfully, as the buses would have been out when it was just getting dangerous to drive. They've spent the afternoon cross-country skiing, building snow forts (this is great snow for it - sticky), and riding the snowmobile. BJ has headed into work, he will have the arduous task of keeping the buildings clear for incoming staff or emergency vehicles. It's nights like these, that I won't sleep well knowing that he's driving, in horrible conditions, on minimal sleep, with no-one in the truck to keep him company. Hopefully, this is one of the last storms, and the official start of spring will bring better weather, mud and new growth.
