Warnings
The storm was insane... the weather people this year have hyped up storms that have dropped a mere 2" of fluffy snow, and have underplayed storms that were truly blizzards. This storm was much of the same - we should expect anywhere between 8-14", heavy at times. Done, no more about the intensity of the storm, that the winds would gust at and above 50 mph, that we should expect wide-spread power outages, that it would mix in the night leaving us with heavy, wet, concrete snow to move. Perhaps it's because they know that the people of Maine have had it with this winter, and no news is generally good (better) news?
Despite the "warnings", we were hit hard. Power went down around 7 pm and when I called CMP, their automated message anticipated power to be restored by 9 pm. No biggie - no need for the generator, lets just watch a movie and wait.... and wait ... and wait. Until 1:30 am! BJ was stuck working for most of the evening, leaving me to tend the fire, the dog, the kids and the candle-lit house. I was hopeful that the morning would be better, the sun would shine and the storm would have passed, I was wrong.
It wasn't until about noon that we were able to go outside and begin the clean-up, up until then, scattered flurries and drifting snow made it difficult to make any head-way. Mace preferred walking on the road rather than the field today. He realized quickly that the snow was much deeper than he remembered the day before. It made getting around in it very difficult.
The kids found that out the hard way too. I had shoveled the deck/walkways and we had taken a walk on the road, they were still feeling adventurous, and despite my fair-warning of deep snow, they set out to sled down the back hill. Getting there wasn't an issue, climbing the snow bank was easy, sledding was faster than expected ... the problems began when they exited their sleds in the field and realized the climb back would be long and exhausting.
Kaylee managed to find a better trail up than Colby. She seemed to stay atop the snow more. Colby struggled, crawling on his belly most of the way. I chuckled as I watched them from the warmth of the living room. Needless to say, this was their one and only run down the hill, they chose to play inside for a while.
How many days until Spring?
