Hospital Visiting

I went to see Lucia on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday she was weak and clearly suffering, but generally in good form. We watched a glorious sunset over Oxford, a red and gold sky, and the first signs of spring awakening. I found it hard to be with her for long seeing her suffer and being unable to help. The Oncology Ward is a busy place and it takes time for them to respond when she calls for help. I asked Andrea to come with me on Tuesday.

On Tuesday I was shocked at how much worse she had got overnight. No one had visited her during the day, so we stayed for several hours. She was really suffering and struggling. There were lovely moments in between though, looking at photographs of the children when they were young. When she saw a photo of Sofia her whole face lit up with joy. We stroked her hair, held her hand and rubbed rose scented cream into her feet. It was very hard to leave though. I don't know how much longer she can continue like this.

Today (Wednesday) her father and brother will finally arrive from Portugal, so we shall leave them alone to spend time together as a family for these next few days.

There was another lovely sunset.
