Ohio River
Today we returned from our 50th anniversary trip to Williamsburg. After crossing the Ohio River on Sunday evening, we stayed for the night in Marietta, Ohio, a lovely little river front city, home of Marietta College, and the final resting place of more American Revolutionary War officers than any other single location.
Bob and I have visited Marietta a number of times, and when I was still teaching, it was one of the stops on the Ohio tour of the seventh graders in my school. It is a little less than three hours from our home, but we had already driven many miles, so it was time to stop. On Monday morning, I announced that this would probably be my best chance to get a blip for the day, so here you have the view of the Ohio River, in the late 17th and early 18th centuries a thoroughfare for pioneers traveling and settling in the West (I stood in the rain to get this blip!)
Marietta is one of the ports for tourists journeying down the Ohio to the Mississippi River. Look closely at the outline of the Christmas lights, and you will see that they form the shape of one of those paddle boats that still occasionally ply the river. On our first visit to Marietta, we stayed in the Lafayette Hotel, located right above this landing point. In the morning we woke up to a big commotion outside our window, and there, docked right where I took this picture, was one of the huge paddle wheel boats.
Look here for a backblip of Thanksgiving Day, the first day of our trip. I will finish backblipping in another day or two.
