Interior of Lancing College Chapel
Amongst the places visited today was Lancing College Chapel. This vast structure is like a Cathedral in its proportions and is very light and airy inside. This view is looking to the main sanctuary. The college was founded in 1848 by Nathaniel Woodard who was curate of New Shoreham. Building began in 1854 and the chapel was started in 1868 and lasted until 1911. The west end was completed in 1975 by the addition of the rose window and further work to finish off this section of the building is planned. The stone came from one quarry at Scaynes Hill, near Haywards Heath. The original architect was R C Carpenter, followed by his partner William Slater and later by RH Carpenter, son of the original architect. The style is very French Gothic and it is a landmark building that can be seen from a good distance away from the east.
