The Unexpected - Diamond in the Sun
Blips can be unexpected. Heading home from Socrates Cafe, where half a dozen of us had discussed "Why do I bother?", I thought I'd probably find some classic springtime shots. Sure enough the daffodils in Princes Street Gardens did look good. And the light installation light bulbs in St Andrews Square, although not switched on in the daylight still looked good in the sun. However I did not expect to see that quintessentially US game baseball going on in Warriston Park. Further on along the old railway line cycle path there seemed to be a crowd gathering at the Craigroyston football pitch but the game wasn't yet underway when I went past and I didn't hang about, or even take a picture. Turned out it was a local cup final between Spartans and Whitehill Welfare. Sounds like an exciting afternoon as it went to extra-time and penalties as Spartans came back from 1-0 down to force extra time and then take the lead with moments to go in extra time. All that despite having had a man sent off earlier. However in the celebrations they had another player sent off and went on to concede an even later goal and then lose the penalty shoot-out. All apparently watched by a crowd of 400. None of which I knew about when I walked by. I might have stayed to watch otherwise! Wonder what it costs to watch a game like that, standing on the touchline behind a barrier?
