South Island
Even after 36 hours travelling the first sight of New Zealand's South Island is breathtaking - the "long white cloud" on the horizon resolving itself into a misty landscape of snow capped peaks stretching as far as the eye can see.
Closer in, on the descent into Christchurch, the view is almost primordial and then suddenly gives way to a lush plain of well ordered farmland.
