Huka Falls

Finally saw our famous Huka Falls. Did not realise that the river narrows to a channel that drops fairly fast ending in a straight drop. This looks up part of the channel to the walking bridge over the middle of this Shute. Occasionally a kayaker goes down but its dangerous. The most dangerous bit is at the drop. If you go over in the middle you end in a deep hole gouged out over the centuries ( I think he said 60m deep). People and boats can get trapped there with the water crashing down and circulating. The river looked so placid upstream were we were two days ago. Also visited Kinloch ( being blasted by winds but with large marinas and upmarket boats and homes, and Acacia (very sheltered today with a Napier school group learning kayaking. Was so impressed with the teacher)
Here is an image of the base of the falls.
