Man Displaying 'Man In Sitting Room'
My cousin P came over this afternoon and brought his large painting of our grandfather (based on this photograph I took with what might have been my very first camera, back in the late 1970s/early 80s). The day was very dark and windy, with gusts of rain, but we found a brief dry interval to prop it in my front door and shoot. Acrylics on paper, a wonderful work, I think, it reminds me of Munch's self portrait standing in his bedroom, though personally I'd prefer this painting. I love the expressive marks and colours, the dashed-off light held in the jug of water, the framed picture in the background, the way the lower part is unfinished, in keeping with the figure's stooped pause (about to turn or sit down or move off). So, an afterlife of sorts for grandfather, who died in his 90s in 1981. Or rather, perhaps, an afterlife of an afterlife.
