I love these architectural puzzles that invite you to imagine a story. This, of course, is a simple one — not one of your great houses, but a couple of cottages and a one-time barn (now a home) in a courtyard in the Lake District. And the question 'Why?' remains unanswered.

But why spoil the original mortar by the extrusive and modern mortar? Pity!
