Oakwood Clock

Passing this landmark in Leeds the other day I noticed a big banner announcing that a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £100,000 had been successful and that restoration work would begin immediately.

So as I was close by for a lesson today I stopped to capture it in all its' fading glory before the restoration.

As well as having external damage there is severe rust inside, it has had little maintenance since 1977.

The clock was originally built for Leeds Kirkgate market in 1904. However when a new entrance was built in 1912 the clock had to be removed - and it was relocated to Oakwood where a shelter was added to the base to provide protection for people waiting for the tram that ran close by.

I will have to keep an eye on progress and blip it again after the work has been done.

Apologies for the dustbin in the shot - I did try to clone it out, but there was too much to 'repair' to look convincing.
