These fine animals are spouting water in a little garden of an Oxford college where members of the Hinshelwood Club are drinking champagne before a dinner that they enjoyed together this evening. It will not be long before the members of the club start spouting (opinions) themselves. Here are
Brian, Keith, Graham and Bob T,
and here
Keith, Graham, Bob T. and Gus (who kindly organised the dinner).
Our club is named after Sir Cyril Hinshelwood, distinguished Head of our University Department from 1937 to 1964. He was Tutor in Chemistry at the college where we are gathered from 1921 to 1937, and he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1956.
Here is the table set for our meal,
with fine table ornaments such as this.
and here the menu, which merits some consideration!
The "Steak Tartar for Veggies" might not sound tremendously appealing to a carnivore such as myself, but it turned out to be delicious. The "steak" was fashioned from perfumed watermelon, and the "egg yolk" on top was made of mango. Here's how the trick is done!
Next on is the monkfish steak with mussel jelly.
Then follow the
Assiette of rabbit (with foie gras foam) and the
Tonka bean cheesecake.
Now replete with food, it is time for the guests to reflect on past times. Seen now in good spirite are

and
Gus and Robert G. exchanging tales of past glories!
That was a very fine evening out with the best of good old friends (some of whom have been my colleagues for nearly 50 years), and excellent food. We are all most grateful to Gus for arranging the function.
May there be many more such reunions,
