To Make a Deposit
Frankly one wonders how this old stone grinding wheel came to be left in a field by the side of the road.
Perhaps it really did fall off the back of a lorry.
It is a substantial stone and judging by the strength of the iron work was designed to do more than simply sharpen knives.
There are many uses of course, but one particular use was to grind and crush a particular type of gorse bush. The softened material was then used as cattle fodder.
This was in Victorian times and all went well until the gorse escaped in to the wild and has since become a colourful and valuable source of nectar and pollen at this time of year.
