The Knee
It's been two and a half weeks since I had the operation to take out a part of my cartilage and a bit of my knee cap. The recuperation continues - unfortunately for someone with my boredom threshold I've got another 6 weeks of doing very little. Some days it feels great (the knee - not the doing very little) - most evenings it aches a lot. But the physical recovery - on the outside at least, has been incredible. Its all too easy to forget that 20 odd years ago I'd have had to be on a footballers wage to get this operation - and now it's an everyday occurrence done in a way that causes so little damage. Heck - at my age these tiny little cuts (theres an identical one on the other side of my kneecap) will only leave scars that look like more wrinkles!
I've a good friend who's daughter is about to have a truly epic life saving operation and it's humbling to see our fantastic NHS battling to save little Maddies life. The prognosis is now good - for an operation that I'm old enough to remember being a huge medical breakthrough, and to know that there are people walking around today who just simply wouldn't have survived 20 years ago. I'm getting to an age where I know people who've started to wear those special rose tinted glasses - but truly the futures the brighter place to be looking.
