Study in Stone
Every couple of years a very exciting sculptural project takes place in the Adelaide Hills. Our very progressive Hills Councils commission a piece of sculpture which will stand in a selected spot within their council area.
The actual place today was to go to an Open Garden - but the parking was abysmal, and there were so many people, we gave up on that plan and decided to visit The Cedars, at Hahndorf - home of legendary South Australian artist Sir Hans Heysen. He is especially well known for his pictures of our iconic trees, the massive River Red Gums that grow around the Adelaide Hills.
His home has been preserved as a memorial to a great man and a great artist.
And it so happens it is the site for this year's Adelaide Hills International Sculpture Symposium.
I think this artist is New Zealander Jocelyn Pratt. As you can see they are covered top to toe with protective clothing. The noise was intense as 8 sculptors, hacked, cut, polished, refined and defined their work.
It's wonderful to be able to see these sculptures come to life under expert hands. It's so rare you can see how these amazing pieces of art are actually made.
