Wyvern
I am a wyvern but people call me and my brother the Lauder Griffins. Wyverns have wings, the barbed tail of a serpent, and the head of a fire-breathing dragon, whilst griffins are composites of lions and eagles.
My brother who stands about 100 metres along the road and I have seen many changes in our 300 years. We used to stand within the grounds of the huge mansion of Grange House and saw many famous visitors who admired the Seton family shield which included our images.
Since 1848 the beautiful house no longer hosted large parties and eventually it was demolished in 1936 and now we look down from our pillars, not upon elegant carriages, but upon the occasional car and bus. Meanwhile I guard the ancient Lover’s Loan path beside me in this area of handsome Victorian houses.
