Live Art

We had almost finished a mammoth session with the young composer Michael-John where he asked a group from teenagers to older people to name their favourite piece of music.

He then called it up on the internet and we discussed each piece.

So far so good.

Then it came to the turn of Nicola Denman, dance artist coordinator at the Macrobert arts centre .

Instead of selecting music from the internet she opened her bag, pulled out a ukulele and sang.



For nearly two and a half hours we had listened to recorded music now we were confronted with a live performance in our midst.

The effect was powerful, a salutary reminder of the strength of live art.

And my own choice of music? Well, I was going to select Carmina Burana then I thought:” what if….”

( Everyone had played safe and I thought it was time to shake them up a bit)

“Could we have John Cage’s 4 minutes and 33 seconds”?

Those familiar with the piece smiled knowingly others sat with hands folded politely, but a theatre director from Glasgow interjected:
“ I think 30 seconds of Cage is enough.”
