Newbridge Memo

This is part of the old theatre hall in the Newbridge Memo - the Miners' Institute and Memorial. Find out more about the history of it Newbridge memo

The Memo was built in 1924 as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the war and contained a picture house, stage and dancehall. This photo is in the cinema auditorium which could house 700. It has most of the original features still, although now in poor condition. It showed it's last film in the 70's and has been disused since although the rest of the building is still in use.

It is stunning, just really magic. I'm involved with the Heritage Lottery Fund and we've granted funding to the Memo to restore the cinema. They gave us a tour around and it is so wonderful. Really difficult to pick one shot though! I'm so lucky to have access to learning about and experiencing so many aspects of our heritage.

It gives me an understanding where we've come from, how our communities have evolved and how we live and breathe our history as we move into the future.
