Freshwater pearls

These are meant to be fresh water pearls. I am puzzled by the striations around them.
Do you think they are real?
My blip is a bit late this evening as we went to a talk by Gilbert van Reenen on photography. He does some wonderful landscapes of this area, and had some good pointers.
