Memorial to Lieut. John Irving, HMS Terror

Served on HMS Terror, one of two ships, the other HMS Erebus, searching for the North West passage. The two ships were 'beset with ice for two years'. In that time 8 officers and 15 sailors die.

Eventually the ships landed on King William's Land. While attempting to march back to Canada, the crew died eventually from either from the cold or lack of food.

His grave and remain were found by American Lieut. Schwatka in 1879, and returned to Edinburgh.He was buried in Dean Cemetery on 7th January 1881.
