Lunar Eclipse
If you live in North America or Western South America, you could go out and check out the full moon being eclipsed by the earth, that is, if you didn't have clouds overhead. In our neck of the woods there was a very small, semi-transparent cloud that ventured in front of the moon as the eclipse started but soon passed to let me view the event in all its glory. The white dot to the right of the moon is Mars.
It was beautiful to watch -- what parts I watched while trying to set up my camera. I couldn't tip the lens up high enough, so I had to take the post out of the tripod and slide it in the horizontal brace and then lean the lens over the center part of the tripod. This meant I really couldn't turn it as the moon travelled across the sky. I had to keep physically turning the tripod.
I wish I had a little better lens, but my 28-300 L had to do. It is a bit soft, but I like the fact it supports such a range.
